Spread Spectrum systems – Utilize specific bands designated by the FCC for Industrial, Scientific and Medical use. These ISM bands are allocated at distinct frequencies and bandwidths throughout the RF spectrum. The three ISM bands most commonly used today are the 902-928 MHz, 2.400-2.4835 GHz and 5.7-5.8 GHz bands. Ranging in speeds from 2.2 Mbs to 33Mbs.

The most common wireless LAN systems on the market today utilize Spread Spectrum technology. The advantage of Spread Spectrum is that no end-user license is required to operate in these bands. The technology, as you will see, provides some key advantages that end users understand and appreciate.

First generation wireless LANs utilized the 902-928 MHz band, but recently most wireless LAN companies are migrating to the 2.4 GHz frequency because of the additional bandwidth (83 MHz vs. 26 MHz) which provides greater data rates than the overcrowded 902 band.
